NEW NEW NEW:
new artists, new work, new ideas at BLOHARD.
Blohard was established by Philadelphia artists to provoke and sustain a dialogue between artists of many cities. Presenting work to challenge the parameters of the local art community (geographic and otherwise), Blohard posits the Philadelphia art scene in a larger framework. The gallery introduces artists and audiences from distant cities to the promise and prospect of a new venue. Philadelphia is an unknown to these cultural pioneers. Blohard, and other local galleries now have the chance to shape an image of Philadelphia as a vital center for new art, by extending opportunities to national and international artists and giving local artists a sense of "other" by which to define themselves.
Conceived as a "present to all of the artists," Blohard proves to be full of surprises for old city. With only the tiniest budget, directors Richard Harrod and Tristin Lowe work collaboratively with a network of artists and supporters to conceive and produce some of the best shows around. Blohard Gallery is a division of Vox Populi, located at 141 North 2nd Street, in the heart of the gallery district of Philadelphia.
Blohard wishes to thank Blohard for all their generous assistance in making this possible. Everyone who helps is Blohard. However, names must be named:
Hank, Leslie, and Calder McNeil have been totally instrumental.
Joy Feasley and Paul Swenbeck personify the essence of this gift.
Nicholas Muellner and David Wickland, endlessly searching for new talent far from home.
The members of Vox Populi who opened their hearts when others might have blanched at the thought of out-of towners a floor above.
Ann 'The Gem of Philadelphia' Karlen , director of Vox. Her sly idealism and clear pragmatism keeps things going and helps us avoid terrible self-righteousness and insularity.
The men of Bardo Pond, who come through in the clutch, and are Philadelphia's best band.
Aaron Igler - a rare combination of multi-faceted skill and potential.
Also, The Clay Studio, who has never been less than kind and always more than helpful.
