The Religious Fight Against Freedom

Have you ever noticed that American crusades for what is "right" are often fought tooth & nail by small-minded bastards? Look at those who ranted against women's suffrage, and those who still oppose the Equal Rights Amendment. Look at those who fought against the abolition of slavery, and those who supported segregation. Look at those who resort to violence and murder in order to take away a woman's right to a safe abortion. Look at the fight against the right to marry by anyone other than monogamous heterosexuals. Look at any fight where the object is to prevent one group from having something that other groups have.

These are all, really, fights against freedom, aren't they? Any one you want to think of. Whether freedom to live, freedom to vote, freedom to work, freedom to have control over your own body, freedom to marry who you want…

And the people who oppose these freedoms… who are they, for the most part? Religious people. How do they "justify" their war against personal freedoms? By using the Bible. It doesn't matter that our nation is not founded upon the edicts of the Judeo-Christian Bible, because most of them refuse to accept this fact, with their revisionist histories in their heads.

Include in the above list, ironically, the fight against freedom to worship. These small-minded cretins, who will moan loud and long about how they're being persecuted in America by evil secularists, will deny until their dying days the right of freedom of religion to those who practice a religion they disapprove of. Ask the millions of pagans in our nation who are treated little better than we atheists.

People often mention that our nation was settled by people who came to these shores seeking this religious freedom, to escape religious persecution. For the most part, this is a fairy tale. In fact, they were trying to escape areas (such as England and Holland) where they were not permitted to institute the repressive theocracies they so dearly desired. So they moved here, and proceeded to set them up. And they fought against the freedoms of those who truly did want real religious freedom.

Those theocracies are long gone. Because one thing that seems to escape these bigots is this: Freedom always wins.

Eventually.

Of course, many of us fighting for these freedoms tend to forget this fact, too. Not that we can be blamed, when we see these idiots succeeding in victory after victory. Our nation is currently heading toward becoming another theocracy. Anyone who doesn't see this is blind. Oh, we're still a long way from it, but the basics are there. We've got a President who injects religion into his job at any opportunity. And the outcry from those who oppose this is not being noticed or respected.

Our freedoms are once again under attack by the religious bastards. Yes, freedom will win, ultimately. But that's small comfort in the here and now.
