Mixed Messages in Sacramento

Here's something I can't quite figure out. Some of you may have heard on the news about the little girl here in Sacramento who was kicked out of a Christian school because her mom worked as a stripper. Such behavior, you see, was in violation of the agreement the mother signed with the school, so they decided to punish the kid by expelling her.

Lots of ballyhoo ensued, including the public saying the school was being unfair. But the mother ultimately quit her stripping job so her kid could stay in school.

Well, now Mom has gone and posed for Playboy! Yep. She said that she thinks "posing for Playboy is the American dream for a woman."

Uh, huh.

Well, the Christian school is mighty upset by this, but apparently, they've decided not to oust the little kindergartener again. She'll remain in school. But they're not happy with Mom, nosirree!

Now, the thing that gets me is that the mother was working as a stripper in order to make the kind of bucks needed to pay the school's tuition. What I wonder is why she is so bent on having her five-year old attend this particular school. I mean, obviously, she herself finds nothing "wrong" with working as a stripper for money, or posing nude in the most famous men's magazine in the world. Far from it, obviously.

So why, can you please tell me, does she want to send her child to a school that will unquestionably teach her that such things are wrong?

Where is the logic, here?

Of course, I do understand what goes on in the minds of people like this woman. It's the same thing that goes on in the minds of millions of Christians every day. They're willing to overlook "little things" in order to focus only on other aspects of their religion. They'll overlook, for example, the Bible's profound anti-female sexism, but rave about its messages of love and brotherhood. They'll look at the Boy Scouts, for example, and gush about how it teaches boys many admirable skills, while conveniently pretending that the organization isn't indirectly teaching bigotry against gays and atheists.

Maybe this woman is under the illusion that Christian schools are somehow better than public schools (despite no evidence to support this). I don't know. I don't, in fact, care.

All I do know is that it really makes me wonder what kind of mother she is. Not because she takes her clothes off for money… I don't care about that. But because she obviously doesn't think about the hypocrisy involved in this decision. Does she not think that eventually her kid is going to grow up, learn about the hubbub surrounding her very early education, and be confused? Was Mommy bad to be a stripper, or to pose in a nudie magazine? If not, why did my school say she was? Why did Mommy send me to a school that labeled her as "bad"?

Can't say I envy this woman that conversation, when it happens.
