Guardian Unicorns

Do you believe in angels? You should, since they're everywhere. They're on posters, T-shirts, mugs, greeting cards… you name it. They're the hottest collectible image since Dilbert.

I can't stand them.

Okay, so some of them are cute, but that's not going to make me like them. It's not what they look like, but what they are that bothers me.

Some might say, "Okay, so you don't believe in angels. So what? You don't believe in unicorns, either, but you like them. What's the difference?"

The difference is a big one. You see, angels are representative of religion. We know how I feel about religion. Wearing an angel on your person or on something identified with your person is pretty close to the same thing as, say, wearing a crucifix around your neck. It pretty much labels you as a person who believes in angels, and by association, everything else having to do with things religiously heavenly.

Now… Were unicorns to suddenly become a representative creature of a new religion, that would be different. Of course, the religion would have to be as repressive and offensive as Christianity for me to pay it much attention. The nauseating TV show, "Touched by a Unicorn," would be optional.

I think you'll agree that the chances of this happening are pretty slim. So until it does, I'll continue to think of unicorns as cute mythical animals and regard angels as the representatives of oppression that they are.
