Pissing Around

Okay, just to cement in your mind the idea that I'm fixated with looking at the backs of peoples' cars…

I'm sure everyone has seen the little "pissing Calvins" on car (or usually pickup truck) windows. This is the completely unauthorized depiction of Calvin, the eternally six year-old kid from the classic comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. He's got the same spiky hair, the same mischievous leer, the same striped shirt… And he's pissing on something.

This "something" takes many forms, everything from the racing numbers of famous NASCAR drivers to different automobile logos, and lots of other stuff, too. It's a straightforward, if somewhat offensive, statement of the vehicle owner's feelings toward the thing being pissed upon.

But how many of you have seen this same little white vinyl Calvin doing something else? I'm referring to the decals that show him on his knees, praying before a big ol' crucifix.

This, too, is a somewhat offensive statement… but I'm honestly not sure what the statement is. Is it implying that Calvin is secretly a good little Christian boy? (A Calvinist, maybe?) If so, these people have obviously never read the strip, since Calvin frequently questions the very existence of God. Are they saying that Calvin should be repentant, after years of being a brat? Or maybe they're implying that it's okay for Calvin to piss on things if he asks forgiveness from God.

I honestly don't know. All I do know is that if one more person emails me and insists that Christians aren't proselytizing when they put religious symbolism on their cars, I'm going to scream.

E-mail me!mailbox
