Meaningless Sacrifice

As I was led to understand it, Jesus sacrificed his life to erase our sins. That's what I was taught in the church I went to, in the Sunday School classes I attended. It's what I hear lots of Christians continue to say. "Jesus died for you," they tell me.

My response has always been pretty much the same: "Big deal."

I mean, let's look at this. Let's say you're Jesus. You're the Son of God. Or, depending on your belief, you are God. Now, if you're the Son of God, then you know darn well that you're gonna go right on up to heaven when you die. More than that, if you're as perfect as is claimed, you know that your death is only temporary, anyway. A few days, you'll be back. And if you are God, then the whole thing is an even bigger sham.

So tell me… What kind of sacrifice is that? It sure doesn't match my definition of one.

Rather than prattling on and on about how Jesus paid "the ultimate price" to save us all, why not give that same recognition to those who have truly sacrificed their lives? Why prostrate oneself in memory of a fairy tale when the world is full of heroes?

The true sacrifices are those made by firemen, police officers, rescue personnel, soldiers, and many, many others, including everyday people whose actions often go without much notice.

These people make real sacrifices that result in lives being saved. As for Jesus… there was no sacrifice, and nothing to be saved in the first place.
