I'm sure everyone visiting here has had run-ins with pro-lifers at some point. It can be pretty emotionally charged, let me tell you. This should come as no surprise, since many pro-lifers are fundamentalists, and will throw God in your face as soon as say hello. Abortions are affronts to God, they'll tell you. Or, the one that amuses me the most… Abortions are child abuse.
Child abuse.
That's like saying that acorn harvesting is equivalent to deforestation. But whatever…
The bit that kills me about this is that fundamentalists are the same people who raise such a stink over those of us who are morally opposed to corporal punishment. Their bible, you see, tells them that it's just peachy to smack your unruly kids around. The bible, in no uncertain terms, promotes child abuse.
Pro-lifers are against child abuse, but only before the child is born. Once they're in the here and now, though… those brats better behave or they'll get the crap knocked outta them.
This is the type of backward mentality I've come to expect from fundamentalists. Aborting a fetus, even one that is tinier than the nail on your small finger, is abuse. Yet raising welts on your child's bottom for some offense isn't abuse, but "discipline."
I'd like to see how these people would react if their bosses at work smacked them upside the head for some minor transgression. Then we'd see if they felt it was discipline or not.
The term "disciplinarian" makes my skin crawl. A good definition of the term would be: "authoritarian bully."
Of course, the bible is full of authoritarian bullies, so this again is no surprise.
The bible, far from being a book of love and tolerance, is a book of abuse and violence. If anyone has any doubts about what kind of society a Christian theocracy would be, let them look no further than the bible's edicts on child-rearing.
Of course, if that's not enough, we could look at how it treats women, but that's an entirely different article…
