You Call This Protection?

As many of you may have heard, Congress approved the latest incarnation of the Freedom from Religious Persecution Act. Basically, this will enable the U.S. to impose sanctions and stuff upon nations found to be violating the rights of religious people.

All well and good, but once again, this is an example of religious hypocrisy at work. Sure, it's a fine thing for us to defend those people, even if only indirectly. No one should be persecuted because of what they believe.

But this includes non-religious people, too. The FFRPA says not a word about those who are being persecuted by religious factions. It would do nothing to protect the rights of people like Salman Rushdie, who's been being persecuted for almost a decade by Islamic forces. It would do nothing to protect anyone who's being hurt by religion, and there are plenty of those around the world.

Think there's likely to be an act proposed that will protect these people? Not bloody likely.
