Time for idiots like Jerry Falwell to make further asses of themselves. Recently, when an announcement was made about a seasonal tree in Boston being called a "holiday" tree instead of a Christmas tree, Falwell said, "There's been a concerted effort to steal Christmas."
Mm hm. Right.
Jerry is a great example of a Christian who doesn't know much about his own faith and its holy days. There's virtually nothing Christian about Christmas, and never has been.
Other comments made over this "controversy" include:
"I'd have cut it down and put it through the chipper," said Donnie Hatt, the logger who felled the tree. "If they decide it should be a holiday tree, I'll tell them to send it back. If it was a holiday tree, you might as well put it up at Easter." Oh, Donnie. That's such a nice attitude of "believe what I believe or fuck you." Sweet.
"I grew up with a Christmas tree, I'm going to stay with a Christmas tree," said Boston's mayor, Thomas Menino. Of course you will, Tom. You're a Christian. No one would expect otherwise.
But here's my question for Tom and Donnie. (I won't ask Jerry, as I already know his answer.) Why do you care what other people call it? You can call it whatever you want. So can I. If I want to call it a solstice tree, I will.
The tree is a symbol. To you guys, it symbolizes your Christian faith. To me, it symbolizes a celebration of Nature. My "solstice tree" would probably offend your sensibilities. But if you want to look at my tree and think of it as a Christmas tree, I won't mind. Go right ahead.
So why can't you just do that with this tree? Get over yourselves, gentlemen. Everybody knows the reason for erecting and lighting the tree. It's for that big ol' holiday later this month. Do you really think anyone believes it's for any other holiday?
