How would you best describe your form of freethought? (Atheist, Agnostic, Humanist, etc.)
Atheist. Humanist. I feel very strong about my disbelief and hold that humans should take pride in their own thoughts and
accomplishments and be responsible for their actions and answer only to themselves.
Were you raised as a freethinker or to be religious?
I was raised to believe in god, but in more or less a non-active Christian home.
What originally set you on the path to freethought?
By careful examination of the bible and god and coming to the realization that the idea is ludicrous and that the bible stands for and condones such cruel practices.
When did you "come out" as a freethinker to family/friends/public, and how did it go over?
I was an atheist for about three years before I came out. My immediate family has the idea of me being an unbeliever, but they
probably think that it's just a phase and I'll grow out of it, which I won't. When I first told them, no it didn't go too well. They were pretty
disappointed and angry.
Do you feel it necessary to continue to hide your beliefs in any circumstances, and if so, why?
No, because if religious people can advertise their beliefs freely, I see no reason why I and everyone else can't,
also.
Have you ever been the victim of discrimination or abuse because of your beliefs?
Yes. A little verbal abuse, if you want to call this that. I've been told I'll go to hell ( give me a break)! I've also been told that I am
"damn wrong and should be ashamed of thinking this way." Then I've been told to keep my mouth shut and not let anyone else find out about it. Nothing really "abusive," but still enough to piss me off.
In what types of freethought activism, if any, do you participate?
Usually, right now I mainly try to do some adverstising on the web, but I'm trying to do more.
What do you feel is the best part of being a freethinker?
Being able to think for myself and not have to answer to and give praise to some fanciful, merciless god who thinks he deserves credit for everything that I do. I enjoy being able to take pride in my own actions and thoughts and I'll answer to no one but myself. It also gives me the chance to enjoy life more and not look toward some fanciful never-never land at the end.
What do you feel is the worst part of being a freethinker?
Well, our society is around 90% religious, so us 10% freethinkers out there have to face that percecution and ostracism wherever we go. Just like anyone else who does not "fit" into society, we are probably looked upon as "freaks" or devil-worshippers because we seem to have a little more brain power than everyone else.
What is the societal atmosphere for freethinkers where you live?
Religious. Mainly Protestant.
How do you define "freedom of religion" and do you think your country attempts to grant this?
I define freedom of religion as the right of every citizen to worship whichever way they like and whatever deity they like, and
if one sees fit to be free FROM religion, then they should have the same rights as those that are practicing. No, our country has too many
shit-for-brains politicians who believe that if our country does not restore Judeo-Christian ethics, then our country does not have a snowball's
chance in hell of surviving. What a load of bull!
If you could share one thought with whoever might read this profile of you, what would it be?
Examine the bible for yourself and learn the truth. Think for yourself and don't be suckered in by these brainwashing
fundamentalists.
